Oh my god I swear to christ people who lead the wizard discourse with "oh but it's not even a good game it's cheap and poorly made and also contains blood libel" "oh but they're not even good books and also the author is actively involved in a legislative hate campaign" do you. HEAR yourself? do you hear yourself? Would it be ok if it was a good game or a good book? Is the problem the Quality of Product?????

Saving You
Fandom: Harry Potter (fuck JKR)
Pairing: Poly!Marauders/GN!reader
Plot: you’ve been taken by the Death Eaters. Even though you’ve been trying to break out from your attic cage, you haven’t been able to break free until one day, you see three familiar faces coming towards the house.
Notes: I don’t agree with JKR and her views or beliefs.
This was inspired by @flufftober 2024’s day 13 prompt: attic, cellar, hidden room.

You don’t know how long you’d been in the attic of this house. You couldn’t figure out why they didn’t shove you into the dungeon. That seemed more like what Death Eaters did.
But up here, you had a window, but even though you had been told that it was unbreakable, thanks to their charms, you still tried.
You hadn’t tried breaking the window yet today, but maybe you didn’t have to. Coming towards the house were three figures that were familiar to you; Sirius Black, James Potter and Remus Lupin. You thought one of them had looked up and saw you, but you couldn’t tell since they kept walking.
When they were out of your line of sight, you started screaming, “HELP! I’M UP HERE! HELP! PLEASE HELP ME! DON’T LEAVE ME HERE!”
Finally, you heard banging on the other side and when you shut up, hoping that it was one of them, you heard James’ voice, “Get away from the door!”
You moved away and told him, “done that, now what?”
Next thing you knew, the door was halfway across the room and for the first time, you saw James walk in. You ran up to him, hugging him, “thank you, Jamie.”
“You’re welcome,” he pulled you back to look at you before leaning down to kiss you. “Go on a date with me?”
“Yes,” you hugged him again and there you stayed until the other two walked in.
“You don’t need to worry about them anymore, dove,” Remus told you, before he kissed you. When you pulled back, you were confused, but Sirius pulled you in for a kiss. The other two coming in from behind you - James kissing your neck and Remus kissing the top of your head, before kissing Sirius’ neck.
When Sirius pulled back, you saw him stare at you and James with complete lust. “Go on a date with all of us, darling, please? We want you to be ours.”
James stopped kissing your neck and kissed your cheek.
“Yes, I’d love to be yours. To be with all of you,” you looked around the room, moving more into James, “but can we please get out of here?”
“Oh, most definitely,” Remus said as he led all of you out. And you never once saw any of the Death Eaters who had been holding you, but you didn’t care, you finally had your guys.

My Hagrid post is getting notes again, so to be clear, J. K. Rowling is a bigot and she’s wrong. Trans men are men. Trans women are women. Non-binary people are non-binary. None of the things she’s fearmongering about are actual problems.
Trans women are not assaulting cis women in women’s-only spaces, nor are cis men pretending to be trans women in order to assault women in women’s only spaces.
Trans athletes at the elite level are very rare, and not sweeping the field the way JK implies, probably because once someone has been on hormones long enough it does indeed change their body. Also why would any man pretend to be trans in order to (attempt to) dominate women’s sports? He’d make more money and get more famous as a bottom of the barrel male athlete than a best in the world female athlete (Citation: The US Women’s Soccer Team). Additionally, the vast majority of trans athletes being attacked by this shit are not elite, they’re just 8 year olds who wanted to play soccer or whatever. Who cares.
No one is trAnSiNg the youth. Many people, notably JKR, are “cissing” the youth, providing us with pretty good evidence that that doesn’t work anyway.
No one is doing surgery on the genitals of small children (unless, of course, they’re intersex children, but JKR has been weirdly silent about that! Hmm!! Wonder why!!!). We have data on this. It’s not happening. Shut up about it.
Puberty blockers are safe and reversible. The bone density thing is well within the normal range of side effects that we all accept all the time for drugs that we need, including for children.
It may be true that JKR is personally triggered by the presence of someone she considers male in a women’s-only space, but (1) her considerations are probably pretty bigoted, and (2) she doesn’t get to make that everyone else’s problem. Many of us are triggered by all sorts of things; we don’t get to make other people’s lives miserable about it.
Drag queens are not inherently sexual or inappropriate for children, and honestly fit very well among the type of entertainers that children enjoy! If you bring your kid to a drag show that’s not for kids, and they see a drag queen do something sexual, that’s on you. “Drag Queen Story Hour” and “11pm Drag Show at Thrust Bar sponsored by Grindr” are going to have pretty different marketing, and if you can’t tell the difference, that’s your problem.
Just. Shut up, lady.
I have a wide variety of (imho) excellent Harry Potter posts in my archive, and I invite you to enjoy them! But please don’t think I’m on board with her shit.

hii im asking your thoughts on something because i agree w a lot of what you say - i see a lot about the inherent misogyny in the fandom but not as much as the transphobia side of it. could you talk about it a bit?
below the cut for anyone who wants to skip 🫶🏻 (this is really long i'm sorry)
HI OKAY:
first of all, i dislike the use of the word inherent in these discussions - i don't think it applies. a fandom (made up of individual people) cannot be inherently anything in my opinion. and that includes misogynistic. if it were built ON misogyny/transphobia and everything and everyone followed those ideals then yes, we'd use the word. but it wasn't built on those and the presence of such things does not make them inherent. it's an individual basis.
it's a very typical view - one that i've discussed a lot before - that simply engaging with this fandom is transphobic. i (a trans man) have been called transphobic for engaging with jkrs world in non-profitable ways. so, if part of the argument is that it's inherently transphobic to be in the fandom when jkr produced the world, i refute that entirely. her views on many things may bleed into the original works and are the forefront of her "public image" but fandom does its best to alleviate the harm that causes. it's not separating art from artist, it's acknowledging that she's awful and creating a space where people from these harmed communities can still engage with something they love.
that being said,,,, yes. lots of transphobia in the fandom. BUT i think it's worthwhile to note that as a trans person with a platform, of course i see more of it. and though that might make me a better person to talk about it, it does mean i'm obviously subjected to it and see it more. i truly don't know how prevalent it is naturally, it just so happens that i see a lot of it.
not that i'm excusing it. because some of the things that have happened to me are fucking vile. but i think it the vast majority of it comes down to the eroding of fandom etiquette (and the rise of fandom on social media).
i posted a video about peter being friends with the marauders for example, and people disliked it. i got a lot of comments about my appearance because people disagreed with me, and i ended up being posted onto reddit truscum. which, if you aren't aware, essentially means they posted screenshots of me in makeup and debated how trans i am (see also: cis "feminine" sirius discourse). i had a notion page of fic recs that i made and put up because i thought it would be a fun and cute thing to do and i thought people would enjoy it. some disagreed with jegulus being on there and my irls had countless dms demanding to know what my deadname is. i've had to block it from my comment sections. if there are disagreements in my comment sections, slurs are thrown easily. i've been posted onto transmed pages because i posted a video talking about my experience on testosterone and i pointed out some of the negative things, which had led to me "not being actually trans because trans people wouldn't complain" (sorry that i don't particularly like shaving my tits ig. diy top surgery isn't particularly my goal). if i post about a ship people don't like, slurs are thrown.
or, my fav, i got multiple dms telling me that they feel as though trans people are "taking over the fandom" when i hit 10k. like??? god fucking forbid people who enjoyed these books as kids now feel comfortable engaging with them again??? god forbid we've made trans people feel welcome. and no, they aren't taking over. you're just paying too much attention to their identity. i truly don't think about the numbers on my account at all because traction means fucking nothing to me when i just want to yap and meet friends (like obviously, ofc so fucking grateful but it's not my goal or priority) but i fear i didn't get 10k for being trans, i got 10k because i'm generally a nice person who people like.
if i do *anything* that people disagree with, i'm subjected to transphobia.
because fandom etiquette is gone, because i'm confident in my identity, because i don't adhere to traditional masculine gender norms that cis men get praised for subverting, but i must just be a confused woman if i wear makeup, right?
i've definitely had my fair share of just,,, transphobia. like just people who dislike *me*, but 99% of the time it's just that people dislike my ships/hcs and instead of being a normal person and scrolling or engaging in something they enjoy, they know an easy way to get back at me. to get back at me for,,, having fun i guess.
and i could go on for ages about certain discourses, but i've said it all before on my tiktok (see again: sirius in makeup).
i think,,, there's a lot of transphobia in the fandom, from my experience. i think a lot of it stems from the fact that these spaces have become more prevalent on social media which is generally an awful place and horrible to trans people, and people can leave a comment and scroll without connecting the fact that it's an actual person.
but on the flip side, there's less transphobia than there is acceptance. i can post a yap and receive transphobic comments for the things that i've said, and i will delete those comments and watch as other people say that my voice sounds so different. or i can open up comments and see "you look so masc here", or i can reply to dms from people starting their own gender identity and be happy about the fact they thought of me to come to.
again, fandom has become more prevalent on social media. social media relies on traction, hate gets more traction than positivity, boom. we see the hate more.
i'm not gonna sit here and say it doesn't hurt. i'm not gonna sit here and say that there definitely isn't a transphobia problem in this fandom. because there is. but i'm also not gonna say that it's inherent, when every single person that i've connected with on a meaningful level, alongside a good 80% of the interactions i've had generally, has been nothing but overwhelmingly accepting.
the transphobia is there, but i won't be there to listen to it or entertain it. those clearly aren't the people i want in my bubble.

No Minors: I’m an adult posting adult content on my adult blog; I will block you on sight.
No Bigots: “Bigots” includes rad fems, exclusionists, and zionists. Trans people need feminism, too, gatekeeping helps no one, and zionism does not equate to Judaism (implying that genocide is a Jewish value is antisemitism).
No Blank Blogs: For context on why I block default icons, see this post.
I intend to use my block button liberally, but I’m hoping the big text will help at least a little bit.
I also edit this post/my blog theme to include a comical amount of 18+ disclaimers whenever I get fed up with the amount of minors trying to follow me. Idk if it works, but it’s cathartic.

Year by Year We're Falling Like Stars
For the Snapetober prompt 'Masks'. The title is a line from The Scarlet Pimpernel's The Riddle. Pimpernel/HP mashups live rent-free in my brain.
Lucius Malfoy was made to sing Falcon in the Dive in re: capturing Harry Potter.
Set in the late autumn of 1980 after Severus has pledged himself to Dumbledore. JKR's timelines (much like her opinions) are both bonkers and bullshit, so I made my own.
@sneverussape and @greens-your-color this may be relevant to your interests. :)
Where had Severus gone off to?
That certainly was the question of the hour. Getting Severus to a party these days seemed nearly impossible. Keeping him there practically took an act of Merlin (surely Merlin’s sticking charms would do it?). Lucius hunted through the first floor for his friend, but Severus had vanished from even his usual haunts.
Could he…
Frowning, Lucius headed for entry and the main staircase, thankful that the Dower House had been built on smaller lines than the manor. As much as he loved the grandeur of his childhood home, ‘continue to share house room with Father post-marriage’ ranked somewhere after ‘sign up for long course of high colonics’ on his life list. Some days, even the acres of home farm and the five miles of deer park between them seemed too short a distance.
He paused at the top of the second landing, listening intently to the Nursery corridor. He checked his pocketwatch and frowned again. Had Nanny forgotten Draco’s potions? She’d never forgotten before this, no matter how hectic the day. Always, always they’d hear the distressingly muffled wails of their tiny child at the appointed hours. He couldn’t blame Draco; the inhaled potions apparatus looked like a torture chamber.
He'd come to them early, with lungs underdeveloped. It was only by some miracle (Severus’ intervention with potions) that he hadn’t lost Cissa and Draco both. He woke in the middle of the night most nights, dread coiling within him until he reassured himself that both his wife and his son still breathed. If she forgot…Lucius strode toward the day nursery, determined to get to the bottom of this dereliction of duty. He stopped in the door, anger slipping away at the sight that greeted him.
“Now, snidget, I know this may not make any sense to you yet, but you’ll understand when you’re a bit older. Slicing, dicing, mincing, and chopping all have distinct definitions in the world of potioneering. Slicing—”
He must have made some noise, for Severus looked up from the bundle of blanket cradled in his lap, all fond openness in his countenance shuttering to cool regard. The rocking chair stilled.
“I wondered where you’d gone off to. Has Draco had his potions?” Lucius asked lightly, his heart wringing at the wariness in Severus’ face.
He desperately missed the Severus from even a year prior. His friend seemed so closed off, so aloof these days.
“He’s having them now,” Severus admitted, shifting Draco so Lucius could see.
A tiny, clear mask sat over Draco’s nose and mouth with tubing running from it to a potion vial. Lucius just caught the hum of magic at the edge of his senses as a soft blue mist steadily clouded the mask. Draco regarded him from behind the mask, his tiny hand wound into Severus’ long hair.
“Is this new?” Lucius asked, noting the sudden wariness in Severus’ eyes.
“It…the chamber caused him so much distress,” Severus floundered.
Lucius crossed to the rocking chair and, heedless of creases, sank to his knees by them.
“You invented this for Draco?”
“The weeping, Lucius. It wasn’t the usual baby crying. He hated it.” Severus looked back down to Draco. “I tested it on myself, first.”
Lucius stifled the urge to scold. For the moment. One day, one day he might get Severus to stop self-experimentation.
Or he could tell Cissa.
“Of course you did,” Lucius murmured. “You always do.”
“It’s based on machines to help give children with breathing troubles medication. I…do you mind very much it isn’t of purely magical origins?” The question came so quietly that Lucius nearly missed it.
“No,” he could answer that honestly, at least. “This…Severus look at me.”
For once, Severus didn’t respond to an order from him.
“Now, please.” They both knew what he meant.
Severus’ head snapped up and Lucius nearly winced at the trepidation in his face. What had Severus got himself involved in? What had so damaged the trust that once existed between them? Even six months ago Severus wouldn’t have worried to this extent over his reaction.
“What you have done is given us a great gift. You gave of your time and your considerable intellect to alleviate our child’s distress. You tested it on yourself, Severus.”
Severus’ lips twisted and he looked down again.
“I needed a stronger headache reliever than usual. The inhaled ones work faster.”
“Oh, I think we can discuss that when Draco’s had his potion.” He found familiar ground and teased.
“No matter what you say about practice, Lucius, I’m not actually your child.” The expected response let something relax in him.
“Tosh. You’ll always be our first,” he answered curtly. “You know how Cissa feels about you experimenting on yourself.”
Severus only glared at him.
“Yes, well, you can put that face away unless you’d very much like to have a chat about hospital-strength headache relievers?” he asked archly.
“Do you see how I’m treated?” Severus complained to Draco. “Terrible, it is.”
Lucius chuckled and then added more seriously, “You know Cissa and I…no matter who took the oath, we consider you Draco’s proper godfather, Severus.”
He would never forget the shocked delight stealing over Severus’ face.

Hi there! so glad to see you posting again I like a lot of what you have to say about Snape. I noticed you say a few times tho that your visual headcanon for Snape isn't conventionally attractive and I just wondered if you had any reference of what he looks like in your mind? An actor or other famous person? just someone like that?
I'm just curious how you imagine Snape because I admit I just see Alan Rickman as Snape in my head since I started with the movies as a kid and didn't read the books a few until years later. It always interests me so much when people say they read the books before the movies or read the books with the movies coming out and saw Snape as someone else.
Its ok if you can't think of anyone just thought I'd ask. thx!
Hello!
*waves enthusiastically like an idiot with zero chill*
I get so giddy when someone sends me an ask like this so I hope no one thinks I don't enjoy questions about Snape or my headcanons. As anyone who knows me knows, I think a lot and especially about those things I love so I always have lots of thoughts rolling around in my head I can be positively overeager to share with anyone interested.
So to answer your question, I don't have a specific person pinned down that is 100% like how I picture Snape in my mind but some close candidates would be a young Adrien Brody (which I think is common enough among Snape fans as a choice, right there with Adam Driver these days), obviously the man that JKR based Snape around, John Nettleship, someone like Adarsh Jaikarran as a potential Hogwarts-era and early 20s Snape (even if he is more good-looking than I usually lean, in some pictures he just channels Snape vibes for me quite a bit) and a very young Julian Richings if you've ever seen photos of him in his younger years (I have two here for you so you can see my point a bit, here and here).
Ironically, Julian Richings in the later years of his acting career would probably have been my first choice for a Voldemort fan cast back in the day when any Harry Potter reboot was purely in the realm of the hypothetical (I mean, c'mon, look at this and tell me you can't see it too) but as JKR is an unapologetic anti-feminist/TERF I provide no monetary support to any of her projects including any licensed games, the watching of future reboots or purchasing of future tie-in books in the HP universe, officially licensed HP merchandise, or even by giving traffic to what was formerly Pottermore, etc.
All I bring to the fandom now is my fan theories and love for Snape, which she not only does not benefit from but never seemed entirely at peace with given how the character got away from her and took off. I can't think of a better way to spite someone so utterly spiteful herself than to take the character she was most shocked by people loving in any capacity and celebrate him in every incarnation (gay, bi, trans, ace, autistic, poc, etc.) with my queer, gender-nonconforming little heart while she gets zero money off me for it.
Anyway I hope the visual guide gives you a little more insight into my mind. I've never seen Snape as "ugly" (even when I joke my Snape is "ugly" and I like him that way) but my mental picture of him is of a man whose looks might fall into that unconventionally attractive sphere or what some people call homely. Occasionally I veer off that a bit, as with Adarsh Jaikarran, oh, oh! And also Lee Soo Hyuk, Song Jae-Rim and Kento Yamazaki (ever since I saw him in the live-action Bloody Monday manga series adaptation)!
But yes, my favorite Snape and the Snape I love isn't usually model attractive but also not quite the gargoyle Harry describes (that kid had some ridiculously high standards of beauty tbh, about the only characters he didn't have mentally critical notes on their appearance was the unnamed Veela, Fleur, and Narcissa Malfoy so yeah he totally thought "Draco's mom has got it going on..." Lol!) but somewhere in that "unconventional" categorization of attractive which I feel really suits a man who so often defies easy categorization in general.
(Excuse all the edits. After I gave a few examples more started hitting me and I was like ohhhhh I should have shared them, why didn't I think to share them? So I may come back and make more edits throughout the day, no promises I won't! Lol)

Get to know the blogger, via five different ships from five different fandoms! (I cheated and made it five different ships from four different fandoms.)
Thanks for tagging me @sky-kenobye!
1. Ineffable husbands/wives/partners/idiots (Good Omens)
My comfort show and ship. What's not to love about the slowest of slow burns hereditary enemies to lovers? For this ship, almost everything works, even several tropes I've never seen the appeal of before make sense to me now (wing fic, gender bending... just to name a few).
On a personal note, it was through this show (or rather its fandom) that I figured out I might be on the aro/ace spectrum, just the experience of "There are other people who feel like that? There are names for that?" was wonderful and so that's also why it holds a special place in my heart. It's just overall a really positive fandom. Plus Neil Gaiman is on tumblr, which - although I hate celebrity culture - is cool.
2. Obikin (Star Wars)
My oldest ship. I started shipping them in 2005 when ROTS came out, I was gripped by the tragedy of the Obi-Wan&Anakin relationship (it was my introduction to Star Wars, I had no idea who Darth Vader was) and started writing fix-it fics to cope. The first fanfic I posted online was an epic Qui-Gon lives (for a while) AU ending in a Vader redemption arc through the power of friendship. I really like reading platonic Anakin & Obi-Wan, but usually go for the Obikin tag on AO3 because I'm too scared of antis and I know the Obikin writers are cool people. Although the Star Wars fandom as a whole has some ugly sides, I really enjoy the smaller Obikin fandom. Shoutout to my Obikin mutuals, who all are such nice, positive and chill people! No purity wanks, no shitting on other people's ships or kinks... maybe because we know we ship one of the most *problematic* pairings and that fiction =/= reality.
3. Stony (MCU)
I ship them not inspite of Civil War but BECAUSE of it. As a seasoned shipper of Obikin, Cherik and Grindeldore (insert obligatory fuck JKR here), I was like: ooooh, nice, this is the good stuff! Unfortunately, most of the fandom doesn't seem to share my excitement.
4. Sambucky (MCU again)
Boat montage, enough said.
In terms of fandom, it was an eye-opener regarding casual or subtle racism in fandom.
5. Kirk/Spock/McCoy (Star Trek)
Normally I'm not that interested in OT3s but I make an exception for these three. I also enjoy any combination of them (Spirk, Spones and McKirk are all great ships) but I need the third one to be there as well, and not just as a friend who sometimes gives advice to help the other two get together but as an important character in his own way.
Let me end with a controversial opinion: Star Trek V - The Final Frontier is my favourite Star Trek movie.
no pressure tagging @starwalkertales, @piecesofeden11, @fangeek-girl, @fulcrum843, @blue-eyed-cutiepatootie, @gingiekittycat and everyone else who hasn't done it yet!

thoughts I've had while re reading poa as a marauders fan, part one (chapters 1 - 4)
(id just like to point out this is my first time reading the books since middle school and first time I've read the books since I became a marauders fan in 2020)
chapter 1
- ok so ye the Weasleys are really poor, but if they're "extremely poor" you'd figure they'd use their money for something other than a vacation
-I forgot sweet little hedwig existed djdjdjdkdjd
-someone please eat the rat
-let the future cat have him pleaseeeee
-why did I start to dislike hermione so much again??? maybe it's just movie hermione I hate and I can't remember the differences between the two
chapter 2
-why are most of the antagonistic characters portrayed as fat and why is the fact that dudley is obese brought up so many fucking times like that seems pretty fat phobic of you Rowling
- when actually reading and thinking about the Harry potter books and movies I imagine the actor that played sirius and not the fanart marauders sirius I'm more used to, and apparently his hair is depicted as elbow length in the books not shoulder length WE WERE ROBBED. could have had long haired sirius with a bun in ootp
- also I swear marauders Era Sirius and golden trio era Sirius (so canon and fanon sirius) are two completely different people in my mind
- also forgot "muggle" news talked about sirius
-just finished the chapter and seriously he is so sassy (guess that's what you get when you're Sirius and marlenes godson, and James and Lily's actual son)
- also I really fucking hate how much mental abuse is glazed over here like????
- it happens every summer and he's forced to return to his abusers like wtf
- this is why I don't like Dumbledore very much
chapter 3
-forgot padfoot wasn't like an actual dog sized dog
-lowkey forgot about padfoot in general ngl
-bro harry are your really throwing precious and innocent Neville under the bus rn come on dude seriously
-ok like when they mention Sirius I can't help to think of the dramatic, gay, Remus obsessed Sirius from all of the wolfstar text posts I've read
-also the fact they have to clarify what a gun is in the wizard news is wow
-same with Ron not knowing how to use a phone
-no wonder these people keep having Wizarding wars and unstable teachers at their schools
- love how this 13 year old kid is panicking over the possibility of going to wizard prison for breaking one rule
-also side note the more I read the more I feel like Daniel Radcliffe portrayed him super well
- hedwig supremacy
- "ur the literal wizard president" "yea but I'm not ur guardian dumbass I can't sign ur permission slip what in hell is this"
- why is reading stans parts so fucking hard
chapter 4
- ah Florean Fortescue the one genuinely nice adult in these books (isn't he like Alice's dad or something?) I just remembered her last name is actually more or less a headcanon uhhh that's fun
- the Irish quidditch team are actually mentioned along with the quidditch world cup even Harry's checkin out the firebolt
- coincidence that Dean and Seamus are mentioned at the same time? I think not
- seriously jkr why do you keep giving kids abusive gaurdians and acting like it's nothing (talking about Neville and his grandmother)
- "...Ron looking incredibly freckly, Hermione very brown..." (pg 55 in my book). when first reading this part years ago I registered it as Hermione was black/poc and not that she was just tan from the sun lmao
- I swear crookshanks was James' old cat and that's why he hated peter
- also Percy wow this why you don't befriend stray rats man
- the things this rat has seen go on in Percy's and Oliver's dorm room....
- still probably not as bad sharing a dorm with Remus and Sirius tho
- I love the twins sense of humor
- but guys stop messing with my precious baby Percy he's just- an autistic overachiever doing his best guys
- ..."he lost everything..." Yes Sirius did in fact lose almost everything Arthur but not bc what you think happened dude
- "he's safe with Dumbledore-" yea fucking right /sar
- "stationniong soul sucking demons around a school is such a good idea hehehehe" /sar
- literally there's no fucking way McGonagall thought Sirius did it- literally fucking refuse to believe that she did
going to start another post for chapter 5 bc oh boy it's going to be long

in light of that stupid fucking video game here’s my favorite anti-hp/jkr video essays :•)
the consumerist dystopia of harry potter by verilybitchie
harry potter by shaun (warning for discussions of anti-semitism and racism, in particular slavery, eugenics, as well as ww2 and the holocaust)
jk rowling’s new friends by shaun
a brief look at harry potter by lily simpson (haven’t actually watched the entirety of this one because it’s 10 hours long but i highly recommend it anyways) side note: again haven’t watched the whole thing so i can’t confirm but apparently the creator defends consuming harry potter content towards the end, as someone pointed out in the tags. i’d proceed with caution
(edit: removed this last video because i hadn’t watched it in its entirety but there’s seemingly a brief “joke” about h.p. lovecraft’s racism from someone who is presumably white. it made me uncomfortable so i wanted to acknowledge my issue with this video and remove it from the recommendations. i’m not even completely sure why lovecraft was brought up to begin with. idk if i’m being too critical but i don’t want to platform a white person saying that as someone who’s non-black and very white passing. i don’t think it’s my discussion to have so i wanted to be careful about promoting the video.)
i wasn’t expecting this post to get traction at all and i just made it in a moment of anger about people still caring more about fictional wizards than real people jkr harms. i should’ve done more research than i did in regards to some of the videos i posted and i apologize for not watching them all the way through before recommending them. i’m going to turn off reblogs because i don’t particularly want to open myself (or any of the video creators) up to harassment from transphobes and jkr defenders. not that i’m mad at anyone for reblogging or anything lol, i’ve just been thinking about it over the last few hours and wanted to acknowledge my mistakes and also protect myself/the creators from potential harassment that may come from Tumblr Terfs

How do you block and filter fics with rampant racist micro aggression since that's never tagged properly and the writer will have a white meltdown if they're ever confronted with the fact their fic is racist?
I honestly can’t tell if this was in earnest or if it’s meant to be another Gotcha! Attempt from one of the anti-censorship posts I’ve annoyed people with, so I’m going to assume it’s the first and do my best to answer.
As a white woman, I am definitely not someone who should be speaking on racism, since the systemic issues I deal with are very very different.
Unfortunately, though, your experience with such a fic is going to mirror what I’d imagine is also your experience with most other forms of media which don’t flag that kind of behavior: bail. Back out. Don’t finish the thing that is upsetting you. Possibly, (as I’ve done with authors on issues that hit home for me) take note of who’s behind the thing so you know to avoid them in the future, as they’ve broken that trust.
This is also known as curating your space. I don’t remember if I go on that rant in the other two (three?) posts that seem to have picked up, but that’s the READER’s side of the equation. Find your garden and tend it well, keep it how you like it, because it is for you and you alone.
My job as a writer is to tag to the best of my ability so you know exactly what you’re bringing into your garden. I don’t want to spoil your flowers anymore than I want someone to trample on mine.
Hopefully, as people talk about this more, authors will be more open to tagging/ modifying and/or adding a footnote for things exactly like this.
Micro aggressions are especially difficult, since (again, pulling purely from my lived experiences) getting folk to agree on what ‘counts’ is rough. But as an author— I want to share my stories. That’s the point! If I’ve written it, then I damn well better be self-aware enough to tag it, and be willing to ADD TAGS so I’m not breaking trust with the people I’m trying to give nice things to. Hopefully that makes sense?
I’m gonna say that again since I feel it needs it: if you’re comfortable enough to write the Real World problem happening, you’re fully capable of being able to recognize why someone might like the warning. Be kind. Tags only work if you use them.
On AO3, I believe they recently made it possible to block an author entirely, so they no longer show up in the results for your searches.
I’ve run across exactly one author I’d have blocked if it was possible at the time, because he refused to add tags to a story that… really needed tags. And, going through the comments in later chapters, dozens of people have asked him to update tags. He claims that doing so will ‘ruin the story’ despite the graphic raped-to-death-then-magically-revived bit having literally nothing to do with the plot at all. Instead, it comes out of literally nowhere in an otherwise really well written tale, and was deeply deeply upsetting to the point that his response to my first chapter squee was “yeah, tell me if you still like it after chapter X”. (Unfortunately i am a very fast reader and had already gotten that far and bailed immediately. Dude if you KNOW it’s THAT upsetting to so many people ADD THE TAG.)
I’ll never read anything he’s written again, just like I refuse to read anything by JKR ( awful human) or Terry Goodkind (I can’t stand how he handles his female characters. At all.)
Obviously these two examples are not identical, but it’s the main comparison I have on hand.
This isn’t meant to sound like I’m belittling or downplaying that concern at all. But until people get better at tagging—and I really wish traditional books and other media would ALSO tag, because I’m very very tired of running into Specific Things without any fucking warning— you have to protect yourself and your happy place by putting up a fence, and booting unsavory things right back over it.
—side note: for those worried about spoiling the plot you can…skip the tags... just know you’re choosing to walk in blind. OR! And I wish i could figure it out—you can add! A hyperlink! That takes you to the footnote at the BOTTOM to add things that deserve a warning but might be spoilers! There’s even a tag for that! ‘More tags in notes!’ These are good and useful things! Use them so your readers can better curate their spaces!—
The system isn’t perfect by any means. There are a million ways to improve, and we’re trying! But please, please y’all use the damn tags because right now it’s the only system we’ve got. Take care of each other.

So I think this is the last post I'll make on the subject of Hogwarts Legacy, unless someone has a genuine and respectful question. I'm done.
I had an anon I'm not planning to post because they were excusing and denying JKR's transphobia. They're blocked. But in their ask, they also said something else, and I'll address that because I think it might be useful to remember beyond a conversation about this game.
They said that all the issues I take with the franchise from an antisemitism perspective are ridiculous, because they conflict with the main story, in which JKR's heroes fight against blood supremacists who are an allegory of Nazis.
This idea has things backwards. You aren't doing Jewish people a favor when you use our trauma as inspiration for your fantasy story.
In my opinion, using real atrocities as inspiration for stories isn't inherently wrong. If you want to have bigotry in the social dynamics of your story, it's good to look at history and what real people went through.
But you need to look at this the right way: this is the trauma that real people still carry, and you are using it to enrich your story. If you aren't doing it respectfully, you're just exploiting it.
I repeatedly said that with regards to antisemitism, I don't think JKR was intentionally harmful. But unintentional harm is still harm, and she never acknowledged it or apologized. She wrote the goblins and dismissed criticism as ridiculous because she didn't mean to do it. She used the holocaust in her Fantastic Beasts movies in an awful way. She even had a supposedly Jewish character join Grindelwald, another wizard Nazi allegory. So even if she can't change the books, the stories that get added to her franchise keep making it worse.
She repeatedly uses different kinds of bigotry in ways that are deeply disrespectful to the way marginalization works in reality. She isn't being careful or respectful. That's why I see her use of a Nazi allegory as the main villains - not once but twice - as exploitative.
I'm not going to give her credit for it as if it makes her an ally to Jewish people. These are the easiest villains to write, since they're (kinda justifiably) seen as the ultimate evil. With fascism on the rise everywhere, this gets more openly challenged, but it wasn't while she was writing the stories.
If you have them as your villains, you aren't doing us a favor, you're taking on a responsibility to treat antisemitism seriously.
And now she joined the fight on the side of fascists, like all TERFs and "gender critical" people did.
Side note: personally, I think the repeated use of the Nazis as the ultimate villains in stories both cheapened and dehumanized them to a dangerous degree. "Nazi" seems like an overblown insult instead of a an ideology. Their evil seems either mythological or cartoonish, something that can't be encountered in real life by real people. A trope, an archetype, a bunch of stock characters.
I'm not saying that writers are at fault for problematic attitudes. I'm not putting that on them. But I think it's an added point for why you don't automatically get credit for having Nazis as your villains. Think of the way people explain why they hate Umbridge more than Voldemort: you can meet someone like Umbridge, but Voldemort? That's a step too far, it's an evil that seems unrealistic.
This very popular explanation always felt off to me. It is realistic. It happened before and it can happen again.

Cross-posted on AO3 under simplyreflected
You went for a night out with your friends James Potter, Lily Evans, Sirius Black and Remus Lupin. You loved getting to spend time with them as all four of them had been there with you through thick and thin.
The five of you had gone out to a club and you went to the bar to get another drink for yourself. As you were standing there, waiting for your drinks, it felt like someone was watching you. You glanced around and saw a guy standing a few seats away staring straight at you, and not breaking the stare, which scared you a bit.
“Can I help you?”, you asked him warily.
“Just admiring the view,” he said simply, while looking you up and down.
You turned away from him as the bartender put your drink in front of you. You picked it up and turned to leave, only to find him right behind you, and because of this, you almost walked straight into him. You spilled a little of your drink and it landed on the floor. You steadied yourself and as you did so, he took a step closer, closing you in. You could not get away from him. He made sure to put both his arms on the bar either side of you.
Knowing you could not get away from him, you glanced over where your friends were to see James looking concerned and staring at you silently asking if you needed help. You hoped how scared you were to get through to him as you looked him directly in the eye.
Thankfully, it seemed to as he turned to the other guys and said something to them, but you could not keep looking at them, because the idiot in front of you put his finger under your chin, making you look at him.
“How about we get out of here? I could show you what a real man feels like,” he told you.
You fought the urge to throw up in your mouth, but you didn’t have to do much as you felt someone wrap one of their arms around you, as they yelled, “hands off my girlfriend” at him and you realised one of your best friends; Sirius Black had come to your rescue.
He pulled you into his arms and kissed you. He pulled back and looked you in the eyes, “are you ok? Did he hurt you?”
You shook your head, and moved more into his arms. He moved his head down so you could whisper in his ear, “he didn’t hurt me, Siri, but he scares me and creeps me out. He won’t leave me alone.”
“That’s ok, doll,” he whispered back. “I’ve got you now.”
You put your head into the crook of his neck and hugged him as you heard him yell, “If you come near my girl again, I will hurt you.” His voice went deeper as he growled, “now leave.”
You guess he must have left because Sirius guided you to the bar stools and ordered drinks for both of you. The girl behind the counter told him, “they’re on the house. Not everyone would’ve done what you just did.”
“No, but she’s my best friend and the love of my life,” he told the bartender. He smiled softly down at you. “If you’ll have me, I’d love to be your boyfriend.”
You smiled up at him and you saw that he was looking at you with so much adoration, “I’ve been in love with you for the last three years, Sirius. I would be an idiot to say no.”
He kissed you and as you pulled away from each other, you leaned on him.
The bartender handed you your drinks. You turned and thanked her before both of you took them and proceeded to walk back to your friends.
Sirius wrapped his arm around you as you both sat down as he spent the next ten minutes telling the story and answering questions about it with so much pizazz to every one of your friends.
James, your best friend - aside from Sirius, smiled at both of you together, before laughing as he said, “we’ve been spending so long trying to get the two of you together and it turns out all it took was him saving you for him to get his act together and ask you out.”

Sorry for not offering my reactions in the moment, I got too immersed in the story to want to post about it. Golden enclave spoilers to (almost) end of ch 15.
I am morbidly thrilled that the thing casually mentioned once at the start of A Deadly Education came back around and it turns out that the entire senior class getting wiped out by malificers was either entirely made up or more complicated than that. So evil. Ay.
And that thing where at first we were presented with Orion as shining conventional hero and El as trying hard to not be a conventional villain, as it seems like the entire world expects her to be, and it turns out it's the other way around, Orion was created from unspeakable acts and El was the balance to that.
It's a lot to take in. And it also doesn't change the fact that El's childhood (which she's still in, she's 17, she's presumably turning 18 in December or so) sucked.
And...I wasn't sure how the prophesy thing was going to be handled, but "this is the only way she didn't get you" works as well as anything I guess. It's not even about "you had to suffer so that you didn't die", it's "you had to suffer because otherwise it would have been unspeakably bad for the world." Oof. I mean, it's horrible, but at least it's consistent in tone with the rest of the series. (Also this is one of the points where the book seems strongly in dialog with Harry Potter to me. I do like her mother's love protecting her because her mother lived more than Harry's mother's love protecting him through her death.) (there is a similar..."this sucks for me but it's for the greater good and I wasn't given a choice but also I'm choosing this anyways.) (side note, JKR very much did not invent the concept of the magical school, there other magical schools in fiction before that including a wizard school in a wizard of earthsea. The idea that wizards have to study to become wizards is kind of baked into the wizard archetype. There's also non-wizard fantasy schools: Talia goes to school in the Arrows of the Queen trilogy, and Song of the Lioness Quartet has some kind of extended training thing iirc. It's not a huge stretch to put a school into fantasy stories aimed at an audience that is going to school. Anyways I think the scholomance is in dialog with Harry Potter but I think it would be a stretch to say it's like, primarily bouncing off of it or anything.) (appropriately, there's no quidditch analog.)
I completely forgot what I was talking about.
Anyways. I probably feel more pleased with myself than I should be that I saw the "destroying a maw-mouth destroys the enclave" thing coming.
I really hope someone is letting El's mum know what's going on, because again, I'm pretty sure El isn't.
And I do enjoy that El went to Maharashtra, she was so sure she'd beaten the prophesy and so ready to rub her great grandmother's face in it. Intense dramatic irony.
#the scholomance#the golden enclaves#I may have to reread this trilogy right after finishing it just cuz

other women and of purer blood narcissa malfoy/severus snape explicit | 7.7k words
narcissa could not pinpoint the exact moment when she realised that married life was not what she expected. perhaps it had been when she had tried to make polite conversation with abraxas about the malfoys’ new business ventures in palermo, which were forcing lucius to spend several nights away from home a week, and her father-in-law had looked at her with pity and said that the family had no investments in italy as far as he knew. perhaps it had been lucius’ face last month, when she failed to get pregnant again, as she had every month for the three years they had been married. she had not expected, when lucius presented her with the magnificent diamond which seemed to be growing looser on her finger every day, that she would be so lonely.
narcissa is adrift, rattling around malfoy manor, when an equally lonely man comes into her lonely life.
this piece was written for @womenofthehouseofblack fest [you can find the other fics in the collection here].
author's notes under the cut
the title comes from voldemort’s line in deathly hallows, spoken when harry has just revealed to him that snape was in love with lily potter:
He desired her, that was all, but when she had gone, he agreed that there were other women, and of purer blood, worthier of him.
when i first read this, i immediately had one person in mind for voldemort to be speaking about: narcissa.
after all, she and snape definitely have a tension in half-blood prince, when she visits him at home - and how on earth does she know how to find his house so easily if she hasn’t been there before? - in cokeworth.
and i have never been able to see snape and voldemort sitting down for a chat about women in general, but voldemort forcing him to confess an attraction to narcissa - a revelation which would give the dark lord the opportunity to humiliate lucius, draco, bellatrix, lily’s memory, and snape and narcissa all at once - is something which seems extremely plausible.
all of which is to say, i think that snarcissa is canon.
other women and of purer blood is set in the summer of 1978, after lucius and narcissa have been married for three years and snape has just left school. it is primarily an examination of two things: class and gender. [so, yes, as many commenters have pointed out, the lady chatterley’s lover vibe is deliberate.]
in her post-series writing and interviews, jkr is clearly of the opinion that the wizarding world is egalitarian in terms of gender - and certainly aspects of its history, such as the fact that there were female ministers for magic centuries before british muggles found themselves with a female prime-minister, support this. but, within the seven-book canon itself, gender roles do seem to be considerably more restrictive than she believes, especially when they intersect with the expectations of social class. the canonical narcissa, like almost every other pureblood woman we meet [such as Molly weasley] does not work, and her narrative arc across the series is defined by her role as wife and mother.
i have always wondered about how narcissa must have felt a pressure to conform to class and gender expectations, owing to both bellatrix and andromeda’s rejection of social convention [for example, i think you can read narcissa’s estrangement from andromeda as something she feels she should do, while bellatrix wants to do it]. in nor all that glisters gold [author’s notes here], another piece i have written for this fest, i look at how bellatrix chafes against marriage, which she sees as coming with a curtailing of her ambition. the narcissa of other women and of purer blood feels the same - reflecting on the opportunities for work and study that her marriage has brought her.
bellatrix also chafes against motherhood. the narcissa of this piece is uncomfortable with the fact that her own childlessness aligns her with her wayward sister - and, as she points out, that motherhood is something which andromeda has "won" against her.
bellatrix is happy, though, to be thought immodest - something lord voldemort is all too happy to make use of. [poor narcissa, realising that bella is having much better sex than she has ever had, despite the fact lucius is hot and voldemort appears to be made of melting wax…]
narcissa, in contrast, has a more complicated relationship with modesty and desire. the description of the witches’ clothing is intended to bring to mind the high-collared and long-sleeved dresses of the edwardian era - which lacked the looseness and ease of the medieval clothing magical people are often depicted as wearing. narcissa in this is someone who is rather buttoned up, and who finds it difficult to express her own wants and opinions selfishly. that lucius - who is written here as neither cruel nor abusive, just distant - doesn’t realise this, and assumes that her need for validation and attention [a trait shared by the canon draco - he must get it from his mother] can be bought with pretty presents, is but one cause of the rift between them.
snape, in contrast, provides narcissa with the comfort of understanding. where lucius patronises her about her "little parties", he supports her greater ambitions. he also offers her a way of freeing herself - even if just for the time they’re together - from the restrictions of her class.
[as i’ve mentioned in the notes to nor all that glisters gold, this is something i also believe voldemort offers bellatrix, and the parallels between snarcissa and bellamort in other women and of purer blood are deliberate.]
the canonical lord voldemort does not appear to respect narcissa - he clearly underestimates her, and his complacency in assuming that she isn’t a complex person proves to be his undoing. but he does not, i think, lack respect for her because of her role in the home. we are almost always shown voldemort in a domestic context in canon - which is fascinating, given that he’s always emphasised as someone who has managed to infiltrate the masculine-coded spaces of wizarding politics - and we see this play out in other women and of purer blood. voldemort recruits his death eaters through the male patron-client networks which are shown to govern wizarding society [lucius’ letter of introduction for snape, for example], but he also makes use of women’s social networks. lucius may not completely appreciate why voldemort regards gossip and female friendship and who has asked whom to be a bridesmaid as useful [narcissa, who is constantly subjected to gossip, understands very well], but the dark lord has clearly been reading up on the spread of all sorts of social movements in which women play a key role in converting their male relatives to the cause…
i also don’t think that voldemort’s lack of respect for narcissa comes from her gender. his lack of respect for lucius however, does…
lucius malfoy’s relationship with his masculinity is something which is displayed very interestingly in canon. he is written as somewhat effete - something which was played up in the films - but he also clearly regards himself both as a protector and as someone whose role as the male head of an elite family should be accompanied by a certain level of deference from men whom he considers beneath him. this is the reason why voldemort chooses to emasculate him in the opening chapter of deathly hallows by taking his wand, and why voldemort keeps him confined to the domestic space of the manor from this point onwards. this masculine competition drives lucius’ relationship with snape in other women and of purer blood - in which he notices the flirtatious vibe between his wife and a man he considers his social inferior and chooses to assert his dominance with humiliating ease.
lucius’ relationship to his manhood is also why i am certain that voldemort knows about the unbreakable vow made between snape and narcissa in half-blood prince - he would be delighted to remind lucius that his failings as a death eater drove narcissa into the arms of another male protector. draco is, of course, not a character in this story, but his presence is still felt. after all, i have always wondered exactly how voldemort got his claws into him - and exactly what role narcissa played in it.
we have one suggestion here. when voldemort disappeared in 1981, narcissa breathed a sigh of relief, thinking he was never going to collect on the debt she owed him for his silence…
she was wrong.
